Dive Whale Island or the SeaFire wreck (scenic)

Whale Island ( Moutohora) is a wildlife sanctuary and lays 7 Kms (20 mins travel by fast boat) NW of Whakatane. It offers wonderful Diving and Snorkeling opportunities with loads of classic New Zealand coastal marine life and depths, 4 to 40 meters.  In October 2008 and ex deepsea fishing trawler the 'Boston seafire' was sunk 800 meters south of the Island to further enhance tha area as a dive location.

We offer 4 hour, 2x dive or snorkeling trips. Equipment, wetsuits,fins, masks available for hire and full dive equipment can be hired from us. SeaFire dives are for experienced divers only however Whale Island offers excellent dives for beginners or the not so experienced, check our prices page for more info.

Try a Dive

Do you want to learn how to dive but think you would like to try it out first under close supervision. We have a Dive instructor available and will take you to a sheltered bay at Whale Island where you will learn the basics first to a depth of about 3 meters on a nice clear sandy bottom followed by a second dive on a shallow 4 meter fish laden reef. All equipment is supplied.

Dive White Island

We run a limited number of dive trips to the White Island, Volkner rocks Marine reserve area. 6 persons required

The Seafire wreck sinking

The 44 meter fishing vessel, Seafire formerly known as the Boston Seafire and before that the Buzzard was scuttled just south of Whale Island in 32 meters on Sunday 19th October, 2008. This will form a new artificial reef dive site which will be open to divers about the beginning of November. Full credit needs to go to The Bay Artificial Reef Charitable Trust.
