Dolphin and Whale Watching

Swim with Dolphins in Whakatane

Pilot Whales near Whale Island Dolphin swimmers, Whale Island Tours  Dolphins at Whale Island, New Zealand

Dolphins and Whales are attracted by the hatch of pilchards, anchovies and baby squid (Baitfish) as they emerge from the local geothermally warmed sea floor to breed near the surface. The baitfish are then herded by Pelagic fish like Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna to form 'baitballs'(tight balls of baitfish on or near the surface) The baitballs provide easy food for the Dolphins.

Annual Dolphin numbers in the area and the length of time they stay vary with the amount of baitfish and pelagics present that season.
We can not always guarantee Dolphin sightings or opportunities to swim with them but when we do, the action is exciting and frenzied and will always be remembered.

On one of our encounters you might also see, feeding Marlin, Tuna and Sharks. We also share the waters with the many Sports fisherman who come to the area annually.

We are %100 locally owned and operated with 20 years of local marine knowledge and experience.

Dolphin and Whale Watching trips are run on a twice daily basis in peak season Jan/Feb and as required otherwise (Weather and sea conditions permitting)
